☀️ Sunscreen Science: Deciphering SPF and PA Ratings for Year-Round Protection

Hello Protection Pros and GlowUnity Boutique Customers!

Sunscreen is the single most important product in your routine for preventing aging (wrinkles, dark spots) and protecting against skin cancer. However, the terms—SPF, PA, broad spectrum—can be confusing. True protection requires understanding what each rating means.

1. SPF (Sun Protection Factor): The UVB Shield

  • What it Measures: SPF measures protection against UVB rays. UVB rays are the "burning" rays—they are responsible for sunburn and contribute to skin cancer.

  • The Number: An SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. The increase in protection is minimal after SPF 30.

  • The Myth: SPF 30 does not mean you can stay in the sun 30 times longer. It simply refers to the level of protection.

2. PA Rating (Protection Grade of UVA): The Aging Shield

  • What it Measures: The PA system (common in Asian countries) measures protection against UVA rays. UVA rays are the "aging" rays—they penetrate deeper, causing collagen breakdown, wrinkles, and long-term DNA damage.

  • The Symbol: PA is rated using plus signs (+).

    • PA+ (low protection)

    • PA++ (moderate protection)

    • PA+++ or PA++++ (high to extremely high protection)

  • The Rule: Always choose a sunscreen rated at least PA+++ for daily use.

3. Broad Spectrum: The All-Around Defense

If a product is labeled "Broad Spectrum," it means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays (often meeting the PA requirements, even if not explicitly labeled). Always look for this label!
