The secret to a lasting, flawless eye look lies in strategic prep and product choices.

 

1. The Canvas: Prep for Proofing

 

  • De-Oil the Lids: The main culprit for smudging is natural oil. Before applying any color, use a cotton swab dipped in micellar water or eye makeup remover to completely de-grease the eyelid and lash line.

  • Prime: Apply a thin layer of eye primer or a matte eyeshadow (color matching your skin tone) across the entire eyelid. This creates a dry, smooth, tacky surface for the liner and shadow to adhere to.

 

2. Eyeliner Longevity: Set the Line

 

  • The Sandwich Technique (Gel/Liquid Liner): Apply your liquid or gel eyeliner as usual. While it's still slightly tacky, use a small, dense, angled brush to lightly press a dark, matching eyeshadow (black or brown) over the liner. This "sets" the liner, locking it into place.

  • The Pencil Secret: If using a pencil liner, always soften it by gently warming the tip on the back of your hand before applying. Then, set it immediately using the eyeshadow sandwich technique above.

 

3. Mascara Mastery: Root to Tip

 

  • Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant: For maximum hold, choose a tube-style or waterproof formula. Water-resistant is for humidity; waterproof is for tears, oils, and general longevity.

  • Application: Always start the mascara wand right at the base (root) of your lashes and wiggle it through to the tip. This deposits the most product at the root, which helps hold the curl.

  • Avoid: Do not pump the mascara wand in the tube, as this pushes air in, drying the formula out faster.
